Wilco sponsors baseball teams in Chicago, Northampton

This spring Wilco is sponsoring two little league baseball teams -- one in their hometown of Chicago (where they've backed teams for many years) and another in Northampton, Mass. The Chicago squad are the Royals, who compete in the Warren Park Youth Baseball League, Coach Pitch Division. In Massachusetts, Wilco and their management company (TMM) co-sponsor a team known as "TMM/Wilco," in the Northampton Little League, Junior Division. Learn more about the Royals here and follow the Northampton 9's progress here.

Duluth, Madison honor Wilco. Can Scranton be far behind?

We all know about the Wisconsin vs. Minnesota rivalry. Brett Favre, America's Dairyland vs. 10,000 Lakes, Gophers, Badgers, Wilco. Wilco? Well, yeah kinda. On the US leg of the most recent Wilco "tundra tour" the band were lovingly named an honorary Duluth band by the Minnesota city's obviously visionary mayor Don Ness. A few days later Jeff Tweedy, tongue firmly in cheek (despite some humorless bloggers not quite getting it... shock!), asked the audience in Madison why there was no proclamation or key to Madison for Wilco, after over a decade of gigs there. Well, lo and behold, despite the mayor's initial reluctance, the City Council of that fine college town and state capitol, not to be outdone by their northern neighbors, drafted a resolution which was later approved unanimously. An article in the Capitol Times lays out the pre-vote story here.

Wilco's upcoming tour dates and a list of potential cities/countries who could potentially bestow further honors on Wilco is available here.

I'll have a Muzzle of Bees, please. Hold the mayo.

Sky Blue Sky Sandwich Co. in Toronto is, as far as we know, the first Wilco themed dining establishment in the world. Not only is the place named after a Wilco album but all the sandwiches are named after Wilco songs as well.

According to Owner Chad Comfort, quoted in blogTO:

"Our sandwiches arrive promptly to the table, the bread toasty and hot. "Side With The Seeds" contains slices of thick cheddar and caramelized onions, slathered in saucy roasted tomatoes between two slices of cheese bread. The simple white loaf is dense and swirled with cheese and the crust is sweet and flavourful."

"How To Fight Loneliness" contains slices of chicken, apple and bacon. The crispy green apple counters the saltiness of the meat and the toasty naan-like bread is floury and sweet. Both sandwiches are served with dill pickles on the side"

To read more about this wacky joint, check out the blogTO review here http://ow.ly/1cVeM

UPDATE: Apparently we were wrong re: the Sky Blue Sky sandwich shop being the only restaurant with Wilco themed food. According to chef/Wilco fan Patrick Connolly at Bobo NYC (who saw the mention above), they feature some Wilco-inspired ribs cooked in duck fat (yes, please) and a special preparation of tater tots and ketchup. http://newyork.metromix.com/restaurants/article/kitchen-radio-bobos-carlos/754202/content. Hey Patrick, can you deliver some to Wilco HQ for our lunch meeting tomorrow, please?

Guitarist Nels Cline and painter Norton Wisdom, both masters of their medium, joined together last year for an afternoon of sonic and visual improvisation caught on film by Aeght Nign. Armed with his guitar and effects, Cline constructs lush soundscapes brought about by Wisdom's brush-stroke spontaneity. Wisdom in turn follows Cline's auditory twists creating and recreating the same canvas.
Two mesmerizing performances are included on the DVD along with special features like the Norton Headcam, and a behind-the-scenes look into the sessions. The DVD is available from Green Leaf Music.
